Vets Heading Home Expands Focus
Albuquerque Heading Home focuses its attention on people who are medically vulnerable and experiencing chronic homelessness. Due to its success, the model is now being applied to veterans, too, regardless of length of time homeless or medical conditions. Thanks to partnerships with City of Albuquerque, Veterans Administration, Supportive Housing Coalition of New Mexico, Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless and Saint Martin’s Hospitality Center, Heading Home is proud to serve those who have served our country.

We Need YOU for Survey Week 2015!
We need many volunteers
…to survey people experiencing homelessness in January. It’s fun, the training is easy and you’ll make a difference! This bi-annual outreach helps providers in the city, like us, to determine needs, progress and challenges in making homelessness rare, short-lived and non-recurring through connecting directly with people in need.

Community Needs You
There is obvious need for a collaborative response to community police relations. On June 12, Albuquerque Heading Home attended a Mayor’s press conference about using a proven model for communal conversation process (from Cincinnati, Ohio) that results in shared agreements from all parties.
There will be forums (not two-minutes at the microphone) for victim’s families, racial minority groups, mental health concerns, the LGBT community, police officers and families, faith communities…any group that self-identifies as wanting to engage in productive conversation. Community-wide agreed outcomes will then be negotiated by these groups.

City to Increase Outreach Efforts

Increased funding for programs working with people living on the streets is anticipated. This follows the City budget recently approved by Albuquerque City Council and is intended to strengthen provider connections throughout the city and to improve client service delivery.Albuquerque Heading Home was specifically named as a program proven to work. It is hoped that some of the City funding would serve to replace SAMHSA funding ($500,000) due to expire September 2014. You can call your City Councilor today and recommend such!
Today, we were glad to learn of additional resources to coordinate outreach service to individuals impacted by mental illness.
